OUR CLOTHES

We carefully select brands that specialize in making merino wool children's clothing that align to our standards of quality, environmental sustainability, and fair labor throughout the production process. Please visit Our Brands page for a detailed list. And read more about how we select brands here.

Merino wool requires gentle care, including washing on a gentle cycle with cold water, using specialized wool detergent, and air drying flat. For a detailed guide to caring for your merino wool garments, please visit our Caring for Wool page.

Yes, merino wool is known for its hypoallergenic properties, making it a great choice for babies and children for sensitive skin or eczema. It is soft, breathable, and because the fine Merino fibers bend easily, wool causes minimal to no skin irritation.

We partner with brands that adhere to strict animal welfare, sustainability practices and fair labor practices. Our brands are transparent about their sources, production, and environmental and social practices, so we can ensure they live up to our standards. Read more about our standards here.

Merino wool is a fully renewable, biodegradable resource. The brands we carry prioritize environmental sustainability and fair labor practices. Further, wool is an incredibly durable material, meaning the clothes we sell can be passed on to siblings or other families. True sustainability cannot be achieved simply in terms of material. I has to be a wholistic approach. In the words of Vivienne Westwood, we believe in "buying less, choosing well, and making it last."

Simply, because larger sizes use more fabric, which costs more to produce. This is a more common practice from our European brands. All of our brands are small, family-owned businesses, who are committed to sustainable production, meaning they make as much as they are able to sell, and no more. And this also means that the items are priced in direct proportion to what they cost to make.

I know, how silly - clothes don't grow! What we mean is that many (all?) of the clothes we sell are designed to be easily cuffed. So when your child is small, you can roll the garment at the wrists and ankles, and then slowly uncuff them as they grow. It might seem like the garments sizes trend larger, but trust us: with cuffing, the item is fully functional and should last you multiple seasons.

We pride ourselves on selling clothes that are top quality and made to last. We expect that when your child has outgrown their clothes, they will have more life to give. Our Preloved program allows you to return your used clothing to us (for brands that we sell -- in good, clean condition). We'll then sell the item at a discounted rate, to extend the life of the garment. In exchange, we will offer you 25% off your next purchase. When you're ready to send in preloved garments, email us at hello@bigelowlane.com and we'll send you a free return label.
